Olympic Format: Formula Kite
Formula Kite features high-speed racing that emphasizes precision and technique. Competitors used specialized foil kites and hydrofoil boards, which lift them above the water to reduce drag and reach remarkable speeds. Originally intended as a mixed-gender relay, the event was adjusted to feature individual competitions for men and women.
Key Rules and Regulations
In Formula Kite racing, athletes navigate a course set with buoys, requiring them to complete laps through upwind and downwind segments. This format demands not only speed but also strategic decision-making and equipment management.
The Paris 2024 event will feature 40 riders, evenly split between men and women.
Opening Series
In the first four days, competitors participate in up to 16 races, aiming for the highest possible ranking. The top two riders from this series advance directly to the Grand Final, while those placed 3rd to 10th proceed to the Semi-Finals.
Semi Finals
The 8 remaining riders are split into two semi-final groups of equal strength. The objective is to win three races. The higher-ranked riders in each semi-final group start with two race wins, while the second-ranked riders carry over one race win. The winner from each semi-final advances to the Grand Final.
Grand Final
The leading rider from the opening series starts with two race wins, while the second-ranked rider begins with one. The aim is to achieve three race wins to end the competition. The Grand Final may consist of anywhere from one to six races.
Winners of the Paris 2024 Formula Kite
The kitefoiling finals at the Paris 2024 Olympics were filled with thrilling moments and unexpected turns. In the men’s competition, Valentin Bontus of Austria clinched the gold medal, making a strong start by winning the first final series race. Slovenia’s Toni Vodisek earned the silver, despite a minor penalty for a late arrival to the marshalling area. In the women’s finals, Eleanor Aldridge from Great Britain delivered a masterful performance, capturing the gold medal and making history as the first-ever Olympic champion in women’s kitefoiling. Lauriane Nolot of France earned the silver, and Annelous Lammerts from the Netherlands secured the bronze, after an intense competition that saw USA’s Daniela Moroz narrowly missing the podium in fourth place.
